Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Philosophy
We receive a lot of messaging that says good feelings are a prerequisite for a good life. So it makes sense that when anxiety, grief, or self-doubt shows up, the instinct is to get rid of it. That's what we've been taught to do.
Except, oftentimes, the harder you fight a feeling, the more space it tends to take up. You can control a lot of things out in the world: your schedule, your choices, what you say yes to. Feelings don't follow the same rules. ACT works from a different assumption: you don't have to feel good in order to live well. That doesn't mean "think positive" or "feel less." It means that you can have the hard feeling right there with you, without needing to win an argument with it or shut it down first, and still walk towards the life you actually want.
